Residents of Decatur Township have the opportunity to engage in a discussion regarding a proposed data center on the south side of the area. The developer, Sabey Data Centers, plans to build two expansive data center buildings on land located north of Camby Road and southeast of Kentucky Avenue, which is already classified for industrial use as part of the Decatur Technology Park.
City-County Councilor Josh Bain, representing the district, emphasized the importance of community feedback prior to any final decisions. He shared on social media that he is committed to ensuring that local voices are considered in the process.
The proposal includes plans for two substantial data centers: one approximately 572,500 square feet in size and a single-story structure, and the other about 490,0 square feet and designed as a two-story building. For perspective, the larger building would be nearly twice the size of the IKEA store in Fishers.
So far, Sabey Data Centers has not submitted a rezoning petition to the city, which is a critical first step in advancing the project. However, they have received a letter of commitment from AES Indiana, which would supply power to the new facilities. In contrast, Citizens Energy Group, responsible for providing water for cooling purposes, has indicated that they cannot issue a commitment letter until they evaluate the project's utility requirements. Both utility providers will need to implement upgrades to accommodate the development.
This data center initiative comes on the heels of Google's recent attempt to establish a data hub in Franklin Township, which was retracted following community pushback.
Community members are encouraged to attend an open house scheduled for 6:30 to 8:30 PM on Tuesday, November 18, at Decatur Township School for Excellence, located at 5106 S High School Road. The event will feature presentations and discussions with representatives from Sabey, the City of Indianapolis Department of Metropolitan Development, and AES Indiana, offering a platform for residents to engage with the stakeholders involved in this significant project.
